In every love story, there is only room for one leading manToday's movie is director Robert Luketic's (
Legally Blonde) film
Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! This film is about a sweet small town girl named Rosalee Futch (
Kate Bosworth-Blue Crush) who wins a date with her favorite celebrity, Tad Hamilton (
Josh Duhamel-Las Vegas [tv]). The date goes better than expected, and Tad shows up on Rosalee's doorstep. Everyone is thrilled; her best friend Cathy (
Ginnifer Goodwin-Mona Lisa Smile), the town, even her father! Everyone except Peter (
Topher Grace-That 70's Show). Also featuring Nathan Lane (
Nicholas Nickleby), and Sean Hayes (
Will & Grace).
This movie is pure fluff, but not in an idiotic kind of way. It was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I especially appreciated how quickly the first part of the film clipped along. It introduces all the characters quickly and efficiently, without bogging down the story with unnecessary details. You find out the who, what and why in about 15 minutes which leave more time for the good stuff. Kate Bosworth was finally well cast as the sweet girl next door; a much better role for the 21 year old. Josh Duhamel was an exceptional choice for the title role; he was handsome, charming and has the kind of smile that will leave teenagers and grown women alike sighing. A strong performance by Grace as the boy next door, and I think that we'll be seeing a lot more of Miss Goodwin. If you are looking for a light hearted, somewhat cheesy romance, this may be the film for you.

TorqueThe movie under the knife, so to speak, today is
Torque, directed by newcomer Joseph Kahn. This film stars Martin Henderson (
Windtalkers) as Cary Ford, a biker who has returned to California after six months to clear his name, and to get back the girl, of course. He runs into trouble with an old rival, a bad ass named Henry James (
Matt Schulze-The Transporter). Henry stirs up lots of trouble for Ford, including getting a gang leader by the name of Trey (
Ice Cube-Friday After Next) after him. Also starring Monet Mazur (
Just Married), Jay Hernandez (
The Rookie), Will Yun Lee (
Die Another Die), and Jaime Pressly (
Not Another Teen Movie).
Torque is what
2 Fast 2 Furious should have been. It brings the same charm, crazy story line, and mediocre script that made
The Fast and the Furious such a hit. Right from the beginning with a street sign that says "Cars Suck", I was hooked. Mind you, I'm sure that I wasn't supposed to laugh as much as I did, and I'm almost ashamed to admit that I really, really enjoyed it. Henderson is a loveably lame character, and considering what he had to work with, he did a great job. Ice Cube sneered his way through the movie, and nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever had a mullet like Schulze. Pressly was deliciously scary in a serial killer creepy way. Besides, who needs dialogue when you can lick your lips like that?! Definately worth seeing once, twice or many, just maybe even three times.
