Something Wicked This Way Comes...Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban finds Harry (
Daniel Radcliff) in his third year at Hogwarts and something terrible has happened. Sirius Black (
Gary Oldman-Hannibal) has escaped from Azkaban prison where he has spent the past 12 years for betraying Harry's parents to You-Know-Who. With the prison's horrible guards called Dementors floating around the school, new classes, new teachers and a set up hippogriff, Harry won't find this year any easier than the last. Also starring Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.
I've said it about the last two movies and I'll say it about this one; if you are a fan, you'll love it. If not, you may not get some of what's going on. Steven Kloves, the screenwriter, left out a few critical points that will the average movie goer guessing as to what the heck is going on. I found the movie very enjoyable, but then again, I am a huge fan of the books. I think director Alfonso Cuaron (
Y tu mamá también) did a great job darkening the film down in anticipation of the upcoming films while maintaining a crisp pace. Radcliff, of course, is great as Harry (hopefully something that will discourage the recasting of the part in future films), while supporting cast Grint and Watson continue to grow as young actors. I also enjoyed the streamlined script, a great asset to films that are, by neccesity, quite long.

For some fun, check out Occupation Girls
Harry Potter in 15 minutesMake one.Director Frank Oz (
The Score) brings us a remake of the 70's film
The Stepford Wives. Joanna Eberhart (
Nicole Kidman-Cold Mountain), a wildly succesful president of a TV Network, after a series of shocking events suffers a nervous breakdown and is moved by her milquetoast of a husband, Walter (
Matthew Broderick-Inspector Gadget), from Manhattan to the chic, upper-class and very modern planned community of Stepford, Connecticut. Once there, she makes good friends with the ascerbic Bobbie Markowitz (
Bette Midler-Isn't She Great?), a jewish writer who's also a recovering alcoholic. Together they find out, much to their growing stupor and-then horror, that all the housewives in town are strangely blissful, and somehow... doomed. What is going on behind the closed doors of the Stepford Men's Association and the Stepford Day Spa? Why is everything perfect here? Will it be too late for Joanna and Bobbie when they finally find out? Also featuring Glenn Close (
Le Divorce), Christopher Walken (
Envy), Jon Lovitz (
Dickie Roberts), and singer Faith Hill in her big screen debut.
I found this film enjoyable. It was cute and quirky with some genuinely funny moments. Glenn Close especially shines at the demented and perpetually ladylike Claire Wellington. Kidman and Broderick crackle with comedic timing and Midler was truely a pleasure to watch. My only complaint is that once Joanna and Bobbie arrive in Stepford, its obvious that something is wrong right away. There was no mystery. The Stepford Wives is worth watching, but you may want to wait until its on DVD.

Where will you be?Today's movie is director Roland Emmerich's (
The Patriot)
The Day After Tomorrow. Yet another 'end of the world' movie, this film stars Dennis Quaid (
The Alamo) as Jack Hall, a climatologist, who's research into the first ice age reveals that the earth is rapidly heading towards a second. However, nobody could guess how soon this would happen. Also starring Jake Gyllenhaal (
Moonlight Mile), and Emmy Rossum (
Mystic River).
This was a comedy wasn't it? Oh, it wasn't. Oh. Huh. Well, I found it damn funny. Is that bad? It wasn't just because the story was kind of silly. That worked for "Armeggedon' and 'The Core.' It couldn't have been the terrible dialoge: '13 Going on 30' was worse. Maybe it was the completely irrelevant scene where someone said "Hey, maybe we should have a wolf chase!" Or it could have been the reporter standing between two twisters and his hair barely ruffling in the 'breeze.' What ever the reason, I laughed pretty hard through it. Now don't get me wrong: I enjoyed it. Far more than I expected to actually. The visual effects were by far the best thing about this movie, but that could just be because I thoroughly enjoy seeing the US get demolished. Seriously though, the effects are great and worth seeing on the big screen. Performances were mediocre at best; the script was just plain ridiculous, and the premise was kind of dumb. There's nothing like a good disaster movie to lighten the spirits.
